Please find attached the dietary list that we follow for Hereditary Fructose Intolerance, please be aware that this is a guide and you should monitor how you or your little one responds to foods. To make it easy I made a journal for my two year old and noted what she had ate and if she had a runny poo/acidic poo/vomiting/tummy pains or rash after eating certain foods. It helps you to learn what they can/can’t tolerate as every child is different. Obviously, the lowest possible fructose diet is always best and safest for their little growing bodies.
You will notice in the attached HFI Diet Guidelines that there are different headings. Try to stick to the foods that are in the ‘foods allowed’ column, especially if your child is young or you have been recently diagnosed.
With regards to multivitamins, you/your child will need a multivitamin daily to receive the necessary nutrients that they can’t get from their restricted diet. For example, Vitamin C and Folate are impossible to naturally consume in the HFI diet as all of the foods they naturally occur in, have a high level of fructose and are very unsafe. We were prescribed Nutricia Paediatric Seravit by our family doctor and our local pharmacist/chemist sourced the vitamins for us.
